FAA/TECS Aircraft Registration System (ACRS) (GQ/GR)

The Aircraft Registration System (ACRS) is an on-line inquiry capability that provides information to Nlets users about commercial and private aircraft registered with FAA.

Nlets will run the query against the publicly available website http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Inquiry.aspx. Aircraft registration data is provided and maintained by the Treasury Enforcement Communications System (TECS).

An agency may request an aircraft registration by sending an inquiry message (GQ) through Nlets to TECS. Information may be requested by three different identifiers: Registration Number (Tail #), Serial Number (or VIN) or Name of Registrant.

This section provides an overview and details regarding the Aircraft Registration Query (GQ) by Registration Number (Tail Number) or Serial Number or Name of Registrant, and the corresponding Aircraft Registration Response (GR).

Aircraft Registration Query Requirements

  • All GQ inquiries must conform to formats specified in this section.
Note: A single 2-character address, "FA", is used for all aircraft registration inquiries (GQ).

An ATN field must be included in all Aircraft Registration Inquiries (GQs).

Query Notes

  • Queries may generate hit lists of up to 50 matches.
  • Names are queried using Last, First, and Middle Initial; while business names are queried with spaces between each name.
  • All name queries are soundexed with the exact matches being at the top of the hit list on multiple hits.
  • Upon receipt of the hit list of abbreviated information on each aircraft, the user must enter another query using the registration number that is displayed on each hit list entry.

A GQ inquiry uses the following data elements: (REG, SER or NAM is specified, but not more than one may be used per inquiry.)

FAA/TECS Aircraft Registration System NIEM Specifications

This section describes the format and provides examples for Aircraft Registration System (ACRS) queries and responses (GQ/GR).

GQ queries must be sent to destination FA. Nlets will run the query against the publically available website http://registry.faa.gov on behalf of the inquiring user.

All Nlets NIEM messages must be based on the Nlets NIEM Message Structure and include the standard Nlets XML Header as detailed in Message Structure. The NIEM header and hierarchy of the elements in this section have been omitted to avoid redundancy. The associated schemas and instances should be consulted to determine the correct XPaths of the elements.

Transaction types detailed below include: Query by Serial Number (GQ), Query by Registration Number (GQ), Query by Owner Name (GQ) and Response from FAA (GR).

Query by Serial Number (GQ)

      This element contains the serial number of the aircraft.

 True indicates that the aircraft has been sighted.

 n2:AircraftSightedDate (optional)
 Date that the aircraft was sighted.

Query Formats

The required formats are described below and in the tables that follow.

  • Destination address MUST ALWAYS BE the 2-character code "FA".
  • All messages will be preceded by a standard input header.
  • The attention field (ATN) must be included in all Aircraft Tracking Inquiries (GQs).

An Aircraft Registration inquiry uses the data elements described in the tables below.

Note: Registration Number (REG) Serial Number (SER) or Name (NAM) is specified but
not more than one may be used per inquiry.
